The following pages are extracted from Joseph Wright’s English Dialect Dictionary, first published in 1905. This has been an aim of the Society since its inception. The work of Dr Manfred Markus at the University of Innsbruck in converting the dictionary into a searchable database has made the task considerably easier. The lists were compiled using a mixture of PDF scans of the books and Dr Markus’s online version. They are not intended as a substitute for the dictionary itself, merely as an overview. The definitions have often been shortened, and sometimes updated where they rely on obsolete words.
