The Best of BBC Introducing in Wessex and Cornwall 2023

Something a bit different this week. Some of you may remember that we used to publish a weekly playlist compiled from the excellent BBC Introducing shows from across the local radio stations in the region (and Cornwall, which shares a show with Devon). Unfortunately the BBC removed the ability to export track listings from their shows directly into Spotify, which meant that we would have to add each track individually. That’s rather a laborious task to do on a weekly basis, but once a year is doable. So this playlist is all the tracks from their end-of-year retrospectives, apart from the ones that aren’t on Spotify.

A plea: streaming services like Spotify don’t pay artists very much, apart from the huge superstars with millions of streams every month. So if there’s a band or artist on this list whose work you particularly enjoy. please consider buying music and merch from them, and/or a ticket to one of their live shows.

The NME’s Essential Wessex Artists 2023

A little late to the party, but each year, the New Musical Express publishes a list of 100 essential artists to watch. This year’s list, published in January, features no fewer than four artists from Wessex, as defined by the Society. So we have compiled a 10-minute mini-playlist, an EP if you like, featuring the “key song” from each artist. A varied selection, but we hope you will find something you will enjoy.

Happy St Ealdhelm’s Day 2020

Today is the feast day of St Ealdhelm, also known as Wessex Day. It is customary for us to show pictures of those local authorities who have flown the flag of Wessex outside their offices, but of course, council offices are all closed this year.

So instead, here’s a picture of some Crimson Cloud Hawthorn, a cultivated variety of Crataegus monogyna biflora, or Glastonbury Thorn, whose colours approximate those of the flag. The Society regards the Hawthorn, or Mayflower, as the Wessex flower par excellence, due to its association with Glastonbury and the fact that it blooms around this time of year. Some people regard the Crimson Cloud variety as a bit gaudy, but personally, I rather like the idea of a red and gold (well, OK, hot pink and pale yellow) hawthorn.

BBC Introducing in Wessex and Cornwall 26.03.2019

This may be our last Spotify playlist. The BBC has said that the ability to save tracks from their radio shows and export them to Spotify will cease at the end of this month, but didn’t specify an exact date. We may get one next week as well, but if not, you can at least enjoy this one.
